AI agent examples: 20 tasks you can hand to an agent at work

Engineering, support, marketing, finance and operations. Each example names the tool, the access level and what asks for approval.

Short answer

Good AI agent examples at work are multi-step tasks someone does by hand today: digging into a new error, opening a pull request with the fix, drafting support replies, building the monthly report, summing up the week. Reading and investigating can run on its own. Sending, publishing, paying, merging and deploying should wait for a person.

What makes a task a good fit for an AI agent?

An AI agent takes a goal, picks the steps, uses tools and checks the result. That pays off when a task has several steps and needs some judgment. If the steps never change, a plain automation does the job for less.

OpenAI's guide to building agents names three signs that an agent fits: decisions full of exceptions and context, rules that are hard to maintain, and lots of unstructured text to make sense of, like documents and conversations[1]. Anthropic adds the other half: start with the simplest solution and add complexity only when you need it[2].

In practice, a good first task comes up often, has a clear start and finish, and makes it easy to check whether the agent got it right. If it goes wrong, the damage is small or someone reviews it first.

How should you read these examples?

The 20 examples are grouped by team. Each one tells you three things:

  • Tool: the app or feature the agent uses. All of them are part of agentes.chat, either built in or connected in one click. Anything still in beta is marked.
  • Access: the level the agent needs in each app: no access, read, or read and write. You can also grant tools one by one.
  • Approval: what waits for a person before it happens.

The approval rules are the same for every example. Reading and investigating never ask. Ordinary writes, like creating a task or updating a record, run once you grant access. Merges, deploys and rollbacks always ask. Deleting, sending, paying, publishing and sharing in a connected app ask for approval or stay switched off. The guide to human-in-the-loop AI agents has the full list.

None of these examples comes with outcome numbers. They are tasks the product does, not promises of time saved.

1. Look into every new error. A routine fires when Sentry opens an issue. The agent hunts for the cause and posts what it found in the channel.Sentry, GitHub, a routineRead on bothNothing: the routine only reads and reports
2. Fix a bug and open the PR. The agent clones the repo, writes the test and the fix, and opens a pull request.GitHub, the workspace's computerRead and write on GitHub, run codeThe merge (one click). Pushes go only to the agent's own branch
3. Review every new PR. A routine reads each pull request when it opens and posts a summary with the risks.GitHub, a routineReadNothing to post in the channel. Commenting on the PR would ask, since every write a routine makes in a connected app asks
4. Propose a rollback. After a bad deploy, the agent lines up the errors and recent commits and prepares the rollback.Sentry, GitHub ActionsRead on Sentry, run workflows on GitHubRunning the rollback workflow: every Actions run asks, and approving it takes a press-and-hold
5. Turn bug reports into issues. The agent reads the thread, writes down the steps to reproduce and files the issue.LinearRead and writeNothing to create; deleting asks or is off
6. Sum up the team's week. Every Friday the agent reads what closed and what's open and posts a summary.Linear, the task board, a routineReadNothing

Example · Acme (fictional company)

A new error at Acme

Sentry opens an issue in Acme's checkout. The Ops agent's routine fires, reads the error, checks it against the day's commits and posts in the incidents channel: when it started, how many events, and the likely commit.

Someone asks the Dev agent for a fix. It opens a PR on its own branch and asks for the merge in the channel. A person reads the diff and approves with one click. The whole flow is in AI agents for incident response.

Example 2 uses the workspace's computer, where the agent runs commands and code, and the browser in example 11 opens there too. The level of every GitHub action is in GitHub and AI agents.

In the wiki, agents read by default and write only when a person asks.

What should an AI agent never do on its own?

OpenAI's guide says sensitive, irreversible or high-stakes actions should get human oversight until you trust the agent more, and names canceling orders, authorizing large refunds and making payments[1]. In agentes.chat these rules live in the code, not in the agent's instructions:

  • Always ask: merges, deploys and rollbacks, meaning any tool with those words in its name, whatever the connector says.
  • Ask or stay off: deleting, sending, paying, publishing, transferring, refunding and sharing in a connected app.
  • Routines: work that runs on its own, on a schedule or an event, can't message people, and every write it makes in a connected app asks.

The request shows up as a card in the chat with the exact action and values. It runs once, exactly as approved, and expires after 24 hours. If you turn it down, your reason becomes a lesson for the agent.

How do you start with one of these?

Pick an example your team does every week. Give the agent read access first, follow its steps in the chat, and grant writes once you trust the results. The step-by-step is in how to create an AI agent, and the whole way of working is in AI agents for teams.

We make agentes.chat, a team chat where people and AI agents work together. It's in early access and opens in waves, by invitation. Join the waitlist to try these examples with your team.

Frequently asked questions

What's a good first AI agent example?

A task that only reads and reports, like looking into every new error or summing up the week. The risk is low, and you can check the results easily before you grant write access.

Can an AI agent answer customers on its own?

It can draft the reply. In agentes.chat, sending email asks for approval by default. An admin can allow sending without approval, but only to an allow list of recipients.

Do I need to code to use these examples?

No. Connectors link in one click and you instruct the agent in plain words. Only the coding examples use the workspace's computer, and the agent is the one writing the code.

Can an agent delete data by mistake?

Delete tools in a connected app ask for approval or stay off. The Postgres connector has no write tools at all.

Which apps work with these agents?

GitHub, Linear, Sentry, Notion, Stripe, Intercom and more than 50 official MCP servers in one click, plus email and Postgres in beta. See MCP connectors explained.
