Short answer
If your company already runs on Microsoft 365, Teams usually wins: Copilot Chat comes with eligible licenses, and a per-channel agent is in preview [9] [10]. If your team relies on tools outside Microsoft, Slack has 2,600+ apps in its directory and Slackbot, its AI agent, on Business+ and Enterprise+ [1] [2].
Slack or Teams: which should you choose?
There's no winner for every team. It comes down to where your company already works and how much your team will lean on AI agents. Here is what the official pages showed on October 29, 2026.
Choose Slack if
- Your team uses a lot of tools outside Microsoft: Slack's directory lists more than 2,600 apps [2].
- You want an AI agent ready in the chat: Slackbot comes with Business+ and Enterprise+ [1].
- You share channels with other companies: from Pro up, with up to 250 organizations [2].
- Someone on the team works on Linux: Slack has a Linux app [4].
- You run on Salesforce: Agentforce agents can be added to Slack [3].
Choose Teams if
- You already pay for Microsoft 365: Teams may be included in your subscription [10].
- Meetings are the center of your work: the Channel Agent learns from the channel's meetings and transcripts [10].
- You want basic AI without an extra license: Copilot Chat comes with eligible licenses [9].
- IT wants agents, apps and licenses in one admin center [10] [12].
- You want to build agents in Copilot Studio and publish them company-wide [12].
How do Slack and Teams compare for AI agents?
| Topic | Slack | Microsoft Teams |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in agent | Slackbot, a “personal AI agent”, on Business+ and Enterprise+; limited trial on Free and Pro [1] | Copilot Chat with eligible licenses; more with a Microsoft Copilot license [9] |
| An agent in the channel | Agent apps added to the channel and @mentioned [3] | The Channel Agent, one per channel, in public preview, with a Copilot license [10] |
| Agents your company builds | Apps from your own developers, or Agentforce agents [3] | Copilot Studio agents, published to Teams with admin approval [12] |
| Who can install agents | Members by default; admins can require approval [3] | IT allows or blocks the Channel Agent and picks who can use it [10] |
| Approvals | Slack says every agentic action by Slackbot gets human approval [1] | The Channel Agent asks before sharing answers with people who may lack access [10] |
| Other companies in a channel | Up to 250 organizations, from Pro up [2] | The Channel Agent doesn't work in channels with guests or external users [10] [11] |
| Apps | Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android [4] | Windows, Mac, web, iOS and Android; no Linux support [13] |
| Entry price | Free plan; Pro from $4.35 per user/month billed yearly [2] | Microsoft 365 Business Basic at $7 per user/month since July 2026 [15] |
In short: Slack has more outside apps, a free plan, a Linux app and channels shared with other companies. Teams ties into all of Microsoft 365, includes Copilot Chat with eligible licenses, and has an agent that learns from the channel's meetings.
Which one has an AI agent built in?
Slack. Slack calls Slackbot a “personal AI agent”. It searches your Slack history, connected apps and the web, builds reports and dashboards, drafts content and takes action in apps like Jira, Figma, Salesforce and Docusign [1]. Ongoing access is on Business+, with a weekly message limit, and on Enterprise+, unlimited; Free and Pro get a limited trial [1]. Slack says Slackbot can route requests to specialized agents and bring results back into the conversation [5]. When it announced an “agent-first workspace” on March 31, 2026, Slack pointed to 2,600 pre-configured apps and agents [8].
Teams. There are two tiers. Copilot Chat comes with eligible Microsoft 365 licenses and doesn't need a Microsoft Copilot license: it searches the web, writes, analyzes uploaded files, creates images and talks to agents [9]. A paid Copilot license adds reasoning across the company's emails, meetings, chats and documents, and advanced agents [9].
In channels, Teams has the Channel Agent. It uses the channel's conversations and meetings to answer questions, write status reports, create tasks, schedule meetings and send emails [10] [11]. It needs a Microsoft Copilot license, is in public preview, and doesn't work in private channels or with guests [10] [11].
How do your own agents get in?
Slack. Agents arrive as apps. Third parties or your own developers can build them, and custom Agentforce agents are created in Salesforce and added to Slack [3]. You add the app to a channel and @mention it, or chat with it directly [3]. By default members can install apps with agents; owners and admins can require approval first. Guests can't use AI apps or agents [3]. For engineers, Slack Code puts people and coding agents together in temporary code channels, on all plans [7].
Teams. The route is Copilot Studio. Once an agent is published, its maker can install it, share a link, or submit it for admin approval so it shows in the organization's Teams app catalog [12]. If the maker allows it, people add the agent to a team and @mention it in that team's channels. In channels and group chats, these agents can't use knowledge sources that need the person's own sign-in, such as SharePoint [12].
In both, you usually call the agent with an @, and building your own goes through a separate tool: an app in Slack, Copilot Studio in Teams. If you're starting from scratch, see how to create an AI agent.
What does the AI cost in each?
Slack. The pricing page lists, per user per month [2]:
- Free: $0, with 90 days of history and up to 10 apps; Slackbot as a limited trial.
- Pro: $4.35 billed yearly or $5.25 monthly; Slackbot as a limited trial.
- Business+: $9 billed yearly or $10.80 monthly, with Slackbot and a weekly message limit.
- Enterprise+: contact sales, with unlimited Slackbot.
Teams. The bill has two parts. First, the Microsoft 365 license: UC Today reported that Business Basic went from $6 to $7 per user per month on July 1, 2026, Business Standard from $12.50 to $14, and Business Premium stayed at $22 [15]. Microsoft notes that some Microsoft 365 licenses come without Teams, in which case you buy Teams separately [10].
Second, the Copilot license, which the Channel Agent needs. Computerworld reported that Microsoft 365 Copilot Business would cost $21 per user per month from December 1, 2025, for organizations with up to 300 people [14]; Microsoft says it needs an annual commitment [16]. Above 300 people, Microsoft points to its enterprise licenses [16]; UC Today cites $30 per user per month for the separate Copilot license [15].
Prices change and vary by country and term, so check each vendor's page before you buy.
What about other companies, devices and languages?
Other companies. In Slack, from Pro up, a channel can bring together up to 250 organizations [2]. In Teams, the documentation says the Channel Agent doesn't work in channels with external or guest users [10] [11]. If your team spends the day with clients and partners in shared channels and wants an agent there, that matters.
Devices. Slack has apps for Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android [4]. Teams has apps for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android and runs in the browser, but Microsoft says Teams is no longer supported on Linux [13]. Creating, removing and configuring a Channel Agent needs the desktop or web app [11].
Languages. Slack's interface comes in nine languages, and Slackbot answers in the language you use in Slack [1] [6]. For the Channel Agent, Microsoft says response quality may vary by language and US English is best supported [10] [11].
What if you want agents as teammates, not apps?
In Slack and Teams, an agent is usually an app you @mention, or each person's own assistant. We make agentes.chat, a team chat built the other way around: agents are members of the workspace. It doesn't connect to Slack or Teams; it's a third option, not an add-on.
- Owners and admins create each agent without code, with a role, instructions, a model, a monthly budget and, if they like, an owner.
- Nobody has to tag an agent: a router picks who answers, one agent for a normal message and up to four for a message meant for everyone.
- Reading never asks. Merges, deploys and rollbacks always wait for a person, and the request shows the exact action.
- Each agent uses the model picked for it, through an API key from seven providers or a subscription, and has a monthly budget in dollars.
Today it runs in the browser, in a desktop app for Mac, Windows and Linux, and in a phone app for iPhone and Android, in English and Brazilian Portuguese, and no price has been announced. Frequently asked questions
Which is cheaper, Slack or Teams?
Does Slack have an AI agent?
